"The purpose of education is not just to learn but to be of service to the community"- these were the words of Atty. Myrish Cadapan-Antonio, keynote lecturer of the Outstanding Sillimanian Awardees (OSA) Balik-Talent Lecture, August 20, at the Silliman Hall in Silliman University.
The event, which was participated by the Paulinian Student Government together with Mr. Kenneth Paul Duran, (Manager, Student Affairs Office) and the student leaders from Foundation University, Asian College, and Negros Oriental State University (Main Campus and Guihulngan Campus), have indeed greatly thought and inspired the young leaders with useful insights in leading and development.
The said activity, in line with Silliman University^^s 118th Foundation Anniversary, was centered on the topic "Leadership Development and Internationalization of Higher Education: Challenges of Outcomes-Based Programming and Impact Evaluation", is the first in the series of lectures that will be conducted by the OSA, in which Atty. Antonio is awarded this year, specifically in the field of Global Leadership Development.
Moreover, Atty. Antonio, is notably the current Directress of fellowship and leadership of Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) center for Public Leadership in Cambridge, Massachusetts. A former deputy legal counsel and director of the Dr. Jovito Salonga Center for Law and Development of Silliman University, she have trained further in international humanitarian law, international human rights law, and education reform. Among her many awards are the Most Outstanding Silliman Law Alumnus Award, HKS Lucius N. Littauer award for academic excellence, HKS Raymond and Josephine Vernon award for academic distinction, Philippines 21 Young Leaders Award. With these, she was really able to share her experiences in both the successes and challenges as a leader in her current institution.
Atty. Antonio have shared, most importantly, that "serving in itself is an honor" and that "leadership is about growth" especially now that student leaders are facing the hurdles in the Information Age, where individuals, especially teenagers have become inadvertently ^^selfish^^ and ^^self-centered^^. Mrs. Antonio also have emphasized the importance of connections inside an institution to rally a collective interest in realizing a certain goal or objective. In this accord, PSGs are hoping to embody the ideals of the lecturer for them to become effective leaders which values development and internationalization in leading.
The activity was made possible through the Silliman University Alumni College, in collaboration with the Office of Student Services.
