SPUD-Con Goes International: Partnership with Taiwan’s Da Chien General Hospital

In a landmark development for St. Paul University Dumaguete (SPUD), the institution has officially expanded its international reach through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with Da Chien General Hospital in Taiwan. The signing ceremony, held today, December 8, 2025, marks a significant milestone in the university’s pursuit of academic excellence, global collaboration, and health care innovation.

Representing SPUD were Dr. Mary Francis Laquinon, Head of the Office of International Relations and Continuing Education; Dr. Cliford Kilat, Dean of the College of Nursing; and three distinguished faculty members—Mr. Leemuel Steve Rodriguez, Mr. Eugene Moises Palarpalar, and Ms. Nicole Ann Llamada. The event was attended by top university officials and faculty, emphasizing the importance of this international partnership.

The agreement with Da Chien General Hospital is a strategic move aligned with the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals, notably SDG #4 on Quality Education, SDG #17 on Partnerships for the Goals, and SDG #3 on Good Health and Well-being. It aims to create a platform for lifelong learning and expanded opportunities for students, faculty, and the broader academic community.

Key initiatives outlined in the MOU include:

- Clinical Internship Opportunities for SPUD nursing students at Da Chien Hospital

- Student and Faculty Exchange Programs to foster cultural and professional exchange

- Collaborative Academic and Research Projects to advance healthcare knowledge

- Employment Pathways for nursing graduates seeking international careers

- Transnationalization and International Care Programs to promote global health initiatives

Adding to the excitement, Dr. Shu Chien-Kang, founder of Da Chien General Hospital, personally expressed his commitment during the meeting by announcing that he would offer scholarships to deserving Filipino students. “This is a huge blessing and a great opportunity for our students,” shared university officials, highlighting the potential for increased access to international education and healthcare training.

The partnership was made possible through the unwavering support of SPUD’s administration, headed by University President Sr. Mila Grace A. Silab, SPC. Vice-President for Academic Affairs, Dr. Maricar Flores, also played a crucial role in facilitating this venture, demonstrating the university’s dedication to fostering global collaborations.

This historic milestone is celebrated by the entire SPUD community—faculty, students, parents, and alumni—who are proud to be part of this step toward greater academic and professional excellence.

As Dr. Laquinon expressed, “Caritas Christi Urget Nos”—the love of Christ urges us forward—underscoring the university’s commitment to service and compassionate healthcare.

Congratulations to everyone involved in making this international partnership a reality. The future looks promising for SPUD’s journey in global healthcare education.
