Isabella Therese Calis Earns Honourable Mention in TSL 2024 International Essay Competition
SPU Dumaguete extends its warm congratulations to Isabella Therese Calis for receiving an Honourable Mention in the prestigious Trust for Sustainable Living (TSL) 2024 International Student Essay Competition. Her outstanding essay, “How can nature help us achieve the UN SDGs in my community?”, stood out for its innovative ideas on leveraging Negros Oriental’s natural resources to promote sustainable development.
Isabella highlighted the role of natural attractions in supporting local industries, such as agriculture, aquaculture, and tourism, and their contribution to economic growth and job creation (SDG). She also emphasized the importance of marine conservation (SDG 14) and the protection of natural heritage sites (SDG 15) to maintain the province’s biodiversity and tourism appeal.
Her success was supported by her coach adviser, Carl Joel Tilos, who was recognized as a Teacher Champion in the competition. Carl’s mentorship was instrumental in guiding Isabella through the process and refining her ideas.
The Honourable Mention certificate was presented to Isabella by Karl Hansen, Director of the Trust for Sustainable Living, and Kirsty Shakespeare, International ESD Manager.
Isabella’s recognition reflects her dedication to sustainability and the potential of young minds to contribute to global sustainability efforts.
