Empowering Education: Grade 9 Students Dive into Geothermal Energy at Palinpinon-1

The Grade 9 students recently embarked on an eye-opening educational trip to the 112.5-MW Palinpinon-1 geothermal facility, operated by the Energy Development Corporation (EDC) on March 7-8, 2025. This pioneering geothermal energy project, nestled within EDC’s Southern Negros Geothermal Project (SNGP), has been a cornerstone of the country’s sustainable energy efforts since 1983, supplying power to the Luzon and Visayas regions.

The educational trip was part of an interdisciplinary performance task for the students' third quarter, seamlessly integrating lessons from Science, Filipino, Mathematics, and Christian Living and Values Education (CLVE). Guided by their dedicated teachers—Ms. Queenver P. Templado (Science), Ms. Mary Jhan Ramirez (Filipino), Mrs. Leah Mae P. Villacampa (Mathematics), and Ms. Corazonita Tumlad (CLVE)—the students explored geothermal energy production. They witnessed firsthand how Earth's internal heat is transformed into electricity, reinforcing the Philippines' position as a leader in geothermal energy.

More than just a field trip, this experience reinforced theoretical concepts discussed in the classroom, allowing students to connect academic lessons with real-world applications. Through guided tours and discussions with industry experts, they gained valuable insights into renewable energy, sustainability, and the technological advancements that drive the nation’s energy sector forward.

The successful initiative was made possible by the innovative teachers who continuously seek dynamic learning opportunities for their students, as well as the unwavering support of parents who recognize the value of experiential education.

Moreover, St. Paul University Dumaguete-Basic Education Department headed by Sr. Maria Althea B. Alfonso SPC (BED Principal) extends heartfelt gratitude to Energy Development Corporation especially to Ms. Mary Grace D. Tito of Negros Corporate Relations, Ms. Edelyn Orillan, RCh., J.D., Community Partner, and Mr. Noel R. Tan, Head of Facility Operations and Maintenance, for their instrumental roles in making this enriching experience possible.

Kudos to the teachers, students, and parents for championing experiential learning that not only educates but also inspires the next generation of innovators.
